Как сообщает РИА Новости, кандидат в президенты США и сенатор-демократ Барак Обама заявил, что "в какой-то момент Финляндия скоро, возможно, сделает шаг к членству в НАТО".
Он сказал это на слушаниях в сенате США в связи с утверждением кандидатуры Барбары Барретт (Barbara McConnell Barrett), внесенной Джорджем Бушем на пост нового посла США в Финляндии.
Сенатор призвал будущего посла поддержать стремление Финляндии вступить в Североатлантический альянс.
"В случае если финский народ и правительство предпочтут добиваться этой цели, я надеюсь, что вы окажете им в этом поддержу", - подчеркнул Обама.
Ms. Barrett, you have a different task, as you will represent America in a country that has travelled further down the path of democracy and prosperity. Finland is a world leader in technology and innovation, and even outranks the United States in some measures of development. But it still faces challenges in its relationship with Russia and its longstanding position outside of Euro-Atlantic security institutions.
